College for Adults – National College Transition Network

Every student who attends college is assigned an advisor. Your advisor is responsible for helping you select classes to meet your degree requirements. You should have received the name and contact information for your advisor when you received your acceptance letter. If not, call the admissions office and request this information.

Call your advisor and introduce yourself. Set up a time to meet with him or her to talk about your placement scores and the classes you need to take in order to complete your program.

Two things to remember about your advisor:

  • Always talk with an advisor before you register for classes.
  • You should feel comfortable talking with your advisor and you should get thoughtful advice from him or her on reaching your career goals. If you are not comfortable with your advisor, you can always ask for another one. Go to the academic advising office and ask how to switch to another advisor. You may need to fill out a form and have your former advisor and new advisor each sign it.
